Yitan is a thoughtfully designed collection of women's wear, where every
piece is faithfully crafted and fondly assembled by its designer, Thomas
Chen Yitan.
Thomas was born in China to parents who loved western classical music and
ballet. He immigrated to America at the age of 10. Growing up in Michigan,
riveted by American culture and how it is signified through one's
appearance, Thomas was drawn to fashion as a way to relate to a new world.
Torn between his left-brain and right one, Thomas chose his love for design
over his childhood dreams of becoming a scientist.
Lured by the urban life of New York City, Thomas enrolled at Parsons School
of Design in New York City to pursue fashion design. While in school, he
became a talent-to-watch by winning the First Prize in the Lord & Taylor
Dress Competition, and subsequently was honored with an award in the First
Annual CFDA Scholarship Competition. Upon graduation, Thomas won the Donna
Karan Gold Thimble award for his "wildly futuristic bodysuits".
Apprenticing three years under Yeohlee Teng, a designer's designer, Thomas
honed his skills in design construction and gained valuable insights into
the industry. He went on to work for Habitual Denim, a progressive designer
jeans line that's beloved by fashion insiders.
Thomas started his own label, Yitan, in the fall of 2004, with the intention
to dress today‚s multifaceted woman who understands true luxury to be the
experience of new ideas and is happily challenged by it every season. His
work has appeared in Harper‚s Bazaar, WWD, Pavement, and Very.
