For Spring 2008, yitan designer Thomas Chen is inspired by the classic mythological archetypal figures. The collection imbues the nobility and strength of Athena and Diana, the innocence and youthful imprudence of Daphne and Icarus, and the rebelliousness of Hermes and Bacchus.
This season, Chen interprets menswear influences into a casual sportive mood for women. Imparting a youthful androgynous attitude, the styles maintain an athletic sexiness. The silhouettes are strong and lean but relaxed by de-emphasizing the waist. Wide waistband trousers slouch around the hips, and gently sculpt the legs. Messenger shorts are tailored creating a sleek look, and skirts are either above the knee penciled or short mini wraps with a distinct twist. The windbreakers crisscross with dynamic asymmetrical lines, and classic button down shirts are transformed with billowing blouson drapes. Subtle details in the dramatic shoulders and design create bold, confident looks.
Colors are fresh and vibrant: from cool whites and steel blues, to intense reds and warm tans, with splashes of bright orange as an accent. The contrast of blue and white stripes and red and white stripes provide a graphic dimension against the solid washes, as well as the black and beige in textured crepe. The combination projects an energized whole, without overpowering the subtle construction details.
Fabrics are deceptively simple but luxurious: from blends of cotton and silk, silk and linen, to novelties like textured bamboo degrade, double faced ramie, and Llaria summer tweeds. The juxtaposition of synthetic and organic blends and natural shells with gunmetal zippers and snaps acknowledges the coexistence of the natural and man-made fabrics and materials in our lives.
Reaching for a certain fantastical continuity with the culture of classic mythical civilization, the collection embodies these icons creating a modern day take on American sportswear.
